Tracey Winton teaches at the University of Waterloo...

here is a brilliant excerpt from something Tracey Winton wrote in 2005...(we went to high school together...)

"The iconoclastic Jewish tradition narrates the space of pilgrimage by commencing at the goal, whereas the Christian tradition, structured after Hermetic narrative, concludes at the goal but describes the journey, involving a temporal and experiential element in representation."

this essay is about how architecture is formed by different motivations...Imagine if your "goal" is to get married...Your dream building might be drawn to suit a wife & children...

If your dream is being a missionary, then your "goal" might end with marriage...So you might draw a sketch for a church where you could preach, separate men & women, to retain resistance from temptation...you get the picture ?

Hence the deep understanding of how architecture is born, & I am so proud of how smart this person has become! Good on you...

p.s. the next time you design a building, think about your motivations first...what is your goal ? or, if you are designing for someone else, what traditions do they follow ?

because historically the story goes that Abraham was married to Sarai...God told Sarai that she would bear a child with Abraham...But Sarai knew that she had been married a long time to Abraham & their marriage had been fruitless...so Sarai thought about it & decided that God had given Sarai a puzzle to unravel...She told Abraham to go to her servant &...well, a child was born...Ishmael...Ishmael was half Jewish & half Arab...so to speak...Later, Sarah miraculously got preganant with Abraham, & Isaac was born...God changed her name to Sarah...Sarah was so upset at the presence of the servant & her child, & the physical witness of the sexual congress, plus the competition Ishmael provided to her own Isaac, that she asked for the servant girl & her son to be sort of evicted from their estate...Ever since then the boy Ishmael harbored tremendous anger & unrest & hatred etcetera...it had been prophesied actually that he would have these feelings...wouldn't you? So this is historically why the Arabs hate the Jews...the big kingpin of it all is actually half-jewish...go figure...
